Harpoon User Edited Scenario
"The Opening Gambit" v1.2
Matthew R. Belk
HSWBBS #1123 @7851

This scenario should only be played by the Blue commander.

Background: The Soviets have initiated a general invasion of Europe. All
that NATO stands for is now being put to the test. The diplomats failed
and now the generals and admirals can do their thing. Along with the Pact
ground offensive, their Northern Fleet has almost completely sortied.
Obviously to disrupt the SLOC's by which NATO land forces will receive
desperately needed men and materiel. Oddly enough, their boomers are all
in the barn. Your job is to reinforce the garrison at Bergen, Norway.
Iceland was overrun in a daring move by Ivan's elite naval infantry and
air rifle units. He now has in place a reinforced division of airborne
troops with tactical fighters and attack planes, ASW aircraft, AWACS
aircraft, and maybe even some long range bombers in regiment size. We
will deal with that threat later. First, Norway must be reinforced.
Good luck.

Orders: You are to escort a Marine Amphibious Brigade to Bergen, Norway
and support it for 12 hours while the grunts unload and set up shop. In
addition, you are to get a twelve ship convoy from Boston, MA to Brest,
France with minimal losses to the heavies. Since we are in a shooting war
with the Russians, you are authorized to execute unrestricted ASW, ASuW,
and AAW against all Redfleet submarines, surface ships and aircraft that
you detect. You are NOT, repeat NOT authorized to initiate a nuclear
exchange without prior authorization, unless Ivan decides to pop one first.

Intelligence Brief: Almost all of the Red Banner Northern Fleet has sortied
into the Norwegian Sea and north Atlantic. It is estimated that there are
seven to ten hunter-killer groups of SSN's and SSGN's operating in the
Atlantic as far south as Norfolk. There are an additional seven to ten
groups of SSN's in the Atlantic and Norwegian Sea. All told, 20-30 Soviet
subs are out there looking for you. Their primary targets are going to be
the convoy from Boston and the amphibs from Little Creek that your carrier
group is escorting. Several ASW surface groups are operating in the
Norwegian Sea and a large SAG centered on the CVHG Baku and the BCGN Kalinin
is believed to be escorting a landing force to somewhere along the European
Atlantic coast. Be prepared to destroy this force as expeditiously as
possible and as completely as possible. If the Med is quiet enough, the
Saratoga and some of her CVW and escorts might be able to assist in your
mission. Watch out for air strikes from Keflavik.

Victory Conditions: Get the amphibs to Bergen and protect them for twelve
hours. Get the convoy to Brest with minimal losses and destroy the Baku,
the Kalinin, and most of the merchies they're escorting.
